Daniel’s concept designs for a new timber framed house, with internal joinery detailing, are being realised by the client with assistance from their American architect.

The house should be ready for occupation by autumn of 2018.

The work to the grade one listed seventeenth century Hall described by Pepys as ‘….a new old fashioned hall’ included a new limecrete floor internally with a marble finish inspired by engravings within the Library’s collection, redecoration and repairs to the bookcases, stone cleaning of the magnificent frieze and cornice and extensive repairs to the parapets, cornice and finials with a mason and two apprentices on site throughout the work.

New lead gutters were provided. Energy efficient lighting and a conservation underfloor heating system maintains a steady RH suitable for the Library’s internationally important books, controlled by multiple sensors and computer monitoring. We led the design team, acted as contract administrator and led visits to site by staff and other groups. The fine mid nineteenth century house is listed and within a conservation area. The house is semi-detached of four stories of brick with painted stone and render details and with a fine Greek revival style front door.

The interior had been partially stripped out and was not weathertight. Our work secured listed building consent for alterations including new joinery and panelled doors, staircase balustrade, plaster cornices as well as the replacement of a single glazed modern conservatory with a zinc clad insulated room with a garden balcony.

Extensive repairs were undertaken including new load bearing studwork partitions to replace steel beams. The interior was refitted with complete new services, bathrooms, kitchen and built in joinery.

Our concept of the ‘Trumpet of the Sea’ was installed to blind openings of the nave clerestory and is intended for use at very special moments in the church’s liturgical life, such as Easter, Christmas and Pentecost. The polished trumpets project into the nave from an ash faced wind chest, providing an acoustically excellent sound and providing a contemporary addition to the Cathedral.

The landmark two tier lantern to the magnificent grade one listed Great Hall was re-leaded, glazing repaired and the weathervane repaired. The works included paint analysis internally and externally.

A late Arts and Crafts House which we substantially altered and enlarged, in keeping with the spirit of the original house. The work included complete renewal of services, large extensions to include new kitchen, swimming pool room, garages and bedrooms.

The original house had some fine details such as several oak panelled rooms, from older houses, oak beams and leaded casements. These were carefully preserved and complemented in the insertion of a new oak staircase, panelled fireplaces, oak floors and country kitchen. The site was re-landscaped with new paths, walls, terracing, metal pergolas and front boundary wall.

The clock pavilion was part of the mediaeval church having been added in 1671, but it was relocated to Regent’s Park when the site was redeveloped and a new church built in the 1830’s.

In 1935 Lord Rothermere returned the pavilion to the church. The figures may represent Gog and Magog strike the bells with their clubs. The grade 1 listed pavilion has been repaired, provided with a new copper roof, redecorated, the leopard pelts re-gilded and the clock face has been painted and gilded.

The project was featured in Church Building in November/December 2017.

The decay to the 1690’s timber belfry and corrosion of key twentieth century steel beams put the Tower at serious risk. The project was very challenging due to the restricted working area in the belfry, made worse by the temporary props to support over 16 tonnes of structure.

Extensive timber repairs with scarfing-in of new timbers and new oak wall plates plus new steelwork was undertaken, also the re-leading of the dome and new lead commemorative rainwater hoppers and downpipes. The Golden Barque weathervane was gilded and the clock face decorated. Tours of the site work for members of the congregation, community and Chapter members.

The work involved removal of extensive cement pointing and careful identification of decayed stonework to the 12th century Chapel of St Thomas, including the repointing and repair of the south aisle.

The project required agreement with Cathedral Fabric Commission for England, the undertaking of mortar analysis, mortar biscuit and pointing samples and the selection of stones for the repair work. The chancel project included repair to the stained glass lancet centre window.
